He moves as easily as anyone else in zero-G. Acrofatic: A minor Belter character is said to be so fat he couldn't support himself on Earth.note Niven wrote Ringworld and decided he wasn't quite done with Known Space yet after all, so the second part of Protector is not as destructive to the setting as "Down in Flames" would have been. The second part is a reworking of "Down in Flames", an un-used outline for a Beowulf Shaeffer story that would have served as a grand finale for Known Space and would have destroyed much of the setting. The first part of the novel is an expansion and partial re-write of the short story "The Adults" that was first published in 1967. The first half of the novel deals with a badly botched First Contact, and the second with the adventures of the titular Protector, the Super Strong, hyper-intelligent adult form of the Pak. It introduces one of the most important but rarely seen races in the Known Space series: the Pak. It has all the qualities that make those books so special: sense of wonder, optimism, humor, and unpredictability (as opposed to, say, John Scalzi's works that have become increasingly predictable).Protector is a hard, hard sci-fi novel by Larry Niven first published in 1973. Protector is yet one more in the superlative Known Space collection of books by Larry Niven that were written last century. But I savored Weiner's narration too much to hurry it by speeding up the playback.

I'm a pretty fast reader, so I'd have finished a real book in one sitting. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? The Pak character and Brennan-Monster were both highly entertaining. Which character – as performed by Tom Weiner – was your favorite?

Like Niven's Ringworld, Protector has a unique concept that captures imaginations, and never lets go. What other book might you compare Protector to and why? Tom Weiner does a fine job of adding emotion to much of the dialog. Would you consider the audio edition of Protector to be better than the print version? Brilliant concept, wonderfully carried out
